Lt. Joseph J.Galvin  Jr., 76, a lifelong resident of Somerville, served on the Somerville Fire Department (mainly Engine 7) for 41 years (1969-2010). He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves. Joe’s biggest joy in life was helping people. He passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2022. Joey was the beloved husband of Jeanie (Paterson) Galvin, loving father of April Nelson Galvin and Wendy Ellen Harris, dear brother of former U.S. Navy Captain James J. Galvin and his wife Barbara, the late Somerville Firefighter Robert A. Galvin, and the late Eileen Galvin Ernst. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and loyal friends that are like family.

Peter Tsardounis, August 15, 11:44 a.m., arrested at Homer Sq. on warrant charges of larceny under $1200, assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious damage to a motor vehicle, and threat to commit a crime.

Christina Harding, August 16, 7:17 p.m., arrested at Newton St. on a charge of malicious wanton defacement of property.

Fire breaks out at Assembly Row business

Somerville firefighters responded to a reported fire at Caffè Nero in Assembly Row on Saturday afternoon. The firefighters battled large flames rising from the roof of the café, eventually extinguishing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to other nearby businesses.

The Somerville Fire Department will conduct its annual inspection of all fire hydrants between Monday, August 22, and Saturday, September 3. 

During inspections, water will be flushed from the hydrants and their mechanical operations will be checked. As a result, some sediment may be disturbed in the water mains, potentially causing rusty water in homes or businesses. The rusty water will appear dirty or discolored but does not pose a health hazard. It could stain fabric, however, so residents are advised not to do laundry while water is discolored. This rusty condition will be temporary and should clear in a few hours.

MBTA and MassDOT update before shutdown of the Orange Line begins

Orange Line service is being suspended from August 19 through September 18. This shutdown will give crews full, uninterrupted access to the tracks, allowing them to complete multiple projects more than five years faster than originally planned.

The Orange Line shutdown will overlap with diversions on the Green Line E Branch and the Green Line Union Branch. Learn more about how to navigate your trip during these shutdowns here.

 

8th Annual Evolution of Hip Hop Festival
