Food-Themed Art by Somerville Students

The K-6 students and the art teachers of the Somerville Public Schools have produced a beautiful array of foodthemed art that is now on exhibit in the auditorium of the Central Library, 79 Highland Ave, Somerville. The exhibit is part of the “Somerville Reads” campaign and will be on display through the end of April, stop in and have a look at their wonderful work.

If you were in Davis Square on Saturday, you might have noticed a big, red balloon hovering high in the sky. You might not have noticed the camera attached to it. The camera and the balloon were part of a grassroots mapping event hosted by the Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science (PLOTS) and Parts and Crafts.

Firefighters rescued a man after he allegedly fell into a silo during the nightshift on Thursday, April 5.

Carlos Barbosa, 47, of Rehoboth found himself in a tight spot after trying to unclog a jam in a paper-filled silo at Universal Wilde in the Inner Belt section of Somerville.

Barbosa was in danger of losing his life in what escalated from a routine issue, to a near death situation.

Suspected heroin users detained, arrested

Results of the Somerville High School girls track meet held at Dilboy Stadium on Thursday, April 5, are as follows:

Nicole Genard set a new SHS record in the long jump of 18’5” – breaking her own record of 18’0 set when she was a freshman in 2009. Genard also placed first in the javelin throw with a distance of 121’0.

Dennis Daly has been many things in his eclectic life. He has been a union organizer, an English graduate student at Northeastern University, a mental health worker on the night shift on a back ward, a columnist for The Salem News, and  a world traveler–who chose to traverse the dangerous hinterlands of Afghanistan,and other hotspots around the world. Daly, who can be found at the ungodly hour of 8 a.m. every Saturday at the Au Bon Pain in Davis Square at the Bagel Bards literary group meeting, is also a poet and a translator. Daly, who has published poetry when he was a young man, has now come back to the fold and in a big way. Over the years he has been published in numerous magazines and small poetry journals such as The Sou’wester, Lyric, Boston Today Magazine, Soundings East, Tendril, Poetry &, Dark Horse, Green House, Lyrical Somerville, Wilderness House Literary Review and is included with two other poets in a chapbook entitled 10 X 3, published by Northeastern University Press. And now he has just completed a verse translation of Sophocles’ Ajax, which is published in the current issue of Wilderness House Literary Review.
