Newstalk – April 22

On April 22, 2020, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

So, Patriots’ Day came and went this week with little fanfare and fuss, and no Boston Marathon, all because of the social distancing requirements cause by the coronavirus threat. We understand the importance of keeping everyone safe, yet we can’t help but miss these grand old traditions that most of us look forward to. It’s unfortunate that we have to give up so much for now, but these events and special occasions will return. For now, be safe and ride this thing out with patience and good humor. After all, what’s the alternative?

Given the COVID-19 crisis, Porchfest cannot take place in its traditional form, instead they would like to continue with Porchfest virtually as CouchFest. This year, bands or individuals will post either prerecorded videos or plan to do live stream performances on May 9. If you have registered before, you’ll remember there is specific directions in the registration process. This year they are requesting you to determine if you can do a live stream performance or, if you have the resources, they encourage you to get your band together virtually for premiere performances. There have been some great examples. Check out this video by the great local outfit Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band: https://youtu.be/WjMzSkSU1Ng. Or post a prerecorded live video. Bands/individuals will still perform during the time slot assigned to their zone (just like prior events) except there will be specific times for the live events. The zones and time periods are: West of Willow Ave. is “west” and will take place from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.; the area between Willow Ave. and Central St. is “central” zone and will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.; and the area east of Central St. is the “east” zone and will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Registration will remain open until May 7.
