Last year, 59 Somerville High School students set a new Guinness World Record for the “most arm-linked people to stand-up simultaneously,” earning the school its first record.

This year, the students will continue its newly record-breaking tradition by having “the most different flags flown simultaneously” on Tuesday, June 14 (which is on Flag Day), in the school’s gymnasium.

The current record is 240, set by Rotary International District 5950 at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.

This yearlong project was organized last summer by the Class of 2017 student government club. With a 1,200 student-body population, representing 40+ nationalities, the high school can “specifically showcase its plethora of cultural pride with this event,” said Sprick, class president. “A second, consecutive world record—that literally centers on waving diversity in the air—is perfect for us!”

The event requires all participants to each hold a different official flag (from a country, region or a city), and wave it in unison for one minute. Photo and video evidence will be sent to the Guinness World Records Headquarters in England afterwards, where judges will determine if a new record was set.

The school will receive verification of their attempt status this summer
