FBI agents have arrested a Somerville man they say is responsible for last year’s Memorial Day heist that started with the kidnapping of an East Cambridge Savings Bank employee and ended with the suspect emptying out the bank’s vault.
Daniel P. Almeida, of 26 Highland Ave., was booked at the Somerville Police Department this morning and taken to a US Federal Court in Boston for arraignment. He had already been in custody because of an issue with his immigration status, a source said.
On the morning of May 26, 2007, Almeida allegedly entered the East Cambridge Savings Bank on Highland Avenue with a bank employee he had kidnapped the night before, tied her up in the basement and made off with cash from the bank’s vault.
Police received a call for a possible break-in at the bank at 8:15 a.m. Saturday and rushed the scene to find the woman tied up in the basement.
FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz did not immediately release details of the investigation that brought Almeida into handcuffs.
Somerville Police Captain Paul Upton said Detective John Oliveira worked on the case with the FBI’s Bank Robbery Task Force.
