Two local organizations had their new officers installed. First with Somerville Lions the new President Paul Carroll, well known here in the ‘Ville following two years of Billy Tauro, who now is Past President. There was a great crowd on Friday night at the club house and we wish Paul the best in his term of office. Then a popular lady who has been with Century Bank here in Somerville now for about 2 years, Jeannie Scarpa, is stepping into the position of President of Somerville Rotary. Her installation was week ago Friday. We wish her well.

One more person pulled papers for Alderman-at-Large. Sean Fitzgerald, a well know local who has been heavily involved in many campaigns himself, will have only two days to get his signatures together. Today, Wednesday, is the deadline to submit signatures. If he gets certified he will be in a race of seven for the four seats. Because we don’t have nine running there will be no primary. It will be the four incumbents facing the three newbies. It should be interesting and we will be following this closely.

We hear that Secret Squirrel Herb Vargas has been around more and more lately. We also heard that he signed the nomination papers for Alderman Tom Taylor even though Herb’s son in law is running against Tom.

Our friend Billy Chambers is home resting up from his motorcycle accident. We wish him well. Our other friend Steve Dalrymple has left MGH after serious surgery and is reportedly resting at the North End Rehab center. You should know he’s still in business and his son Nick is handling the company business nicely. So if you’re wondering what’s happening with his business, don’t fret. You can call Nick. After all, it is called Steve & Sons, and is in good hands.

Also back in the hospital is the matriarch of the Tauro family. She’s been in and out but hopefully will be home soon recovering.

Happy Birthday to our friends this week: A long time Somerville resident who also homes up in Ocean Park Maine, James Brian Roche. We wish him the best. He’s a good guy.  Also, happy Birthday to young Alessandro Capobianco who turned five this past week. And finally to Paul Carroll, our new Lion’s President, and also owner of Carroll and Sons roofers.

Save the date for Mayor Joseph Curtatone’s annual Boston Harbor Cruise. The cruise will take place on the first Wednesday in August, the 3rd, at Long Wharf,  Boston. It’s normally a packed event and a good time is had by everyone.

Congratulations to Benny and Debora Tauro on celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They are a nice couple and we wish them the best.

Bert Gay, the husband of former Mayor Dot Gay, is back in the hospital undergoing surgery again. We wish him a speedy recovery and a return home soon.

Alderman-at-Large Dennis Sullivan will end his citywide tour of Spring Offices this Saturday with stops in Wards six and seven, at Statue Park in Davis Square, 10 a.m. (this should be interesting with the crowd that hangs there) and then up in Teele Square at 11a.m.

A shout out to Margie McKenzie, a life long resident here in the city. She was telling us the other day that when she was a little girl she remembered that you could see for a huge distance fields off Davis Square that now have the streets of Wallace, Park, and Simpson. She looks great. Stop in sometime and say hello to her at her daughters place, Nellie’s Wildflowers on Holland Street. She’s a great lady.

Congratulations to John Roderick and his wife Heather on recently celebrating their anniversary. They are lifelong residents and sort of “historians” as well as nice people. We wish them the very best.

Happy birthday to Laney Joyce as well as Mayor Joseph Curtatone.
