Event seeks to highlight true meaning of Memorial Day
This Memorial Day will see a new event to honor the service and heroism of those service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while in service to our country. “Memorial on the Mystic” will feature an outdoor musical tribute presented by the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, N’Harmony, and the Somerville High School Chorus followed by a spectacular fireworks tribute as the evening’s finale. Hosted and emceed by Commissioner of Veterans’ Services Bryan Bishop and Greater Somerville’s Joe Lynch, this one-hour performance hopes to bring awareness to the true meaning of Memorial Day.

City offices will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. Trash, recycling, and yard waste collection will be on a one-day delay for the week.
There will be no street sweeping on Memorial Day. Parking meters and residential permit parking will not be enforced over the holiday.

Somerville youth ages 12-18 eligible for summer job with Sunsetters, a youth singing and dancing troupe that performs throughout the city in July and August.
Calling all Somerville youth! The Somerville Sunsetters, a singing and dancing youth group that performs throughout Somerville in July and August, is returning for Summer 2019! Auditions will be held for Somerville youth between the ages of 12 and 18 on Tuesday evening, May 28, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Argenziano School. All Somerville residents meeting the age eligibility may audition, and are asked to bring a song of your choice on your mobile device or on a CD to perform to. The 2019 Sunsetters roster will include up to 10 young people and four alternate members, and will be accompanied by a live music ensemble during performances in July and August. The Sunsetters is a program of the Somerville Recreation Department.

May 13 through 20 was Infrastructure Week. “Infrastructure” includes a wide range of systems that help us get where we need to go and deliver crucial services like water and electricity. Maintaining our infrastructure, especially aging systems, is a challenge both locally and nationally. Infrastructure Week was a good time to remember how central our infrastructure is to our day-to-day lives and think about how we will tackle the challenges of maintaining and updating it.
