When Barbara Cassesso passed away in her home in Somerville on October 18, 2022, the world lost a little bit of its tolerance; its compassion; and its will to stand up for those who are oppressed, abandoned, ignored and in need. Barbara passed away peacefully and without pain in the constant and loving care of her children.

Thanks for the ride

Somerville Police officers were dispatched to Connecticut Ave. location in the early morning hours of last Sunday on reports of a dispute.

Upon arrival, the officers met with the reporting party, who stated that he was asked by a friend to pick up a man, later identified as Frandy Ramirez-Rodriguez, in Boston at the train station and give him a ride home to the Connecticut Ave. location.

Somerville coach named 2021-2022 MIAA Coach of the Year

Congratulations to Michael Morgan. Mr. Morgan was named the 2021-2022 MIAA Coach of the Year for Boys Tennis! This award is given for excellence of character, impact upon students, and community and coaching credentials. In addition to coaching the SHS boys tennis team, Mr. Morgan teaches math and runs the Summer Explore program welcoming incoming 9th graders to Somerville High School. He is pictured to the far right with a last year’s team.

The Growing Center “Yard Sale” was an annual event pre-pandemic that raised funds for our Annual Fund. After a multi-year hiatus, it’s back in 2022 with a twist. Rather than a traditional yard sale, it’s morphed into a two-part shopping experience: a curated, seasonally-themed secondhand boutique sale where 100% of the proceeds go to the Growing Center, and a new “Makers’ Market” filled with local craft vendors.

Clover Food Lab brings new, climate friendly bites to Somerville

Somerville rolls at the Catholic Memorial Invitational

The Somerville Boys and Girls Cross Country teams recently competed in the illustrious Catholic Memorial Invitational. The meet, featuring some of the best schools in eastern Massachusetts, was held at Franklin Park last Saturday. Somerville standout runner Samuel Buckley came in 5th overall, as the Highlanders placed four runners in the top 50 to secure 5th place overall. The Lady Highlanders had strong performances as well, as both teams have excelled in other elite meets all season. Both squads had impressive showings at the Amherst Invitational, the Fort Devens Challenge, and the Frank Kelley Invitational. The Boys and Girls teams remain undefeated in Greater Boston League action, with unblemished 6-0 records. The teams close out the regular season at the Greater Boston League (GBL) League Championships, held at MacDonald Park on October 26. Top ten finishers in both races are designated GBL All Stars.

Dear Somerville Times,

During the last week of July, a deadly heatwave smothered over 90 million Americans [1]. This year marked the third hottest July on record, averaging 2.8 degrees above average [2]. Temperatures averaged in the triple digits in regions like the Northeast and mid-South. These record-breaking numbers [3] have caused many heat-related deaths, put people with underlying medical conditions at risk, and have caused power outages in major cities like Boston.
