Residents urged to use bug spray when outdoors

Friday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) announced that West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes in Massachusetts for the first time this year. The presence of WNV was confirmed by the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory in a mosquito sample collected July 6 in the town of Brookline in Norfolk County. No human or animal cases of WNV or Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) have been detected so far this year.

Alleged bicycle thief preferred moped

On Monday, June 19, Somerville Police officers were dispatched to the Super Stop and Shop store on McGrath Hwy. on reports of a stolen moped.

Upon arrival, the officers were met by the victim, who stated that he came out of Stop and Shop to find his motor scooter stolen. He provided a photo of the moped to the officers. He then pointed out another man who stated that he witnessed the incident and could provide a description of the suspect.

The Somerville Police are asking the public’s help in identifying the pictured suspect in a recent residential breaking and entering in Somerville.

Anyone who has information is asked to contact the Somerville Police Criminal Investigation Department at 617-625-1600 x7231.

There have been multiple incidents of an unknown male breaking into homes between 12:00 and 6:00 a.m. by entering through unlocked first-floor windows. Residents are urged to lock all windows (and doors) overnight, particularly those on the first floor. Residents are also urged to call police if they see anything unusual in their neighborhood such as loitering; persons in driveways or yards who shouldn’t be; and any other suspicious behavior. This activity is occurring in large part along the Beacon St. corridor along the city limits of Cambridge.
