Quest Tha Youngn on the rise By George P. Hassett Somerville hip hop artist Quest Tha Youngn would rather build a reputation on solid music than gangster affiliations. The 22-year-old Quest, real name Anthony Brogna, has the kind of underworld roots valued in rap circles – his uncle is infamous Winter Hill Gang boss Howard T. Winter. "[Being Winter's nephew] doesn't define me and who I am," he said. "But I can't avoid it either. It gives me an advantage – in my music, I can bring an inside look at what mob life is really like." Quest, who attended the Winter Hill Community School and Somerville High, is building momentum in underground hip hop circles today as he works with industry heavyweights such as producer Statik Selektah and Lil' Fame of the renowned Brooklyn group, M.O.P. |

Climate week localizes a global issue Lauren C. Ostberg Somerville has a history of hosting riders with an urgent message. This week, however, instead of Paul Revere bearing news of the British, four student bicyclists will rally the troops against climate change. The four bicyclists, known as "Climate Riders," are one of three groups of college students who will dedicate eight weeks of their summer to grassroots environmental activism throughout the northeast U.S. They are also the featured guests of Somerville's Climate Week, with daily appearances scheduled from today, Wednesday, June 23, through Sunday.

Police took two convicted drug users by surprise Saturday morning as they prepared to shoot heroin in the parking lot of the Gulf Gas Station on Alewife Brook Parkway.
Robert White, 28, of 341 Alewife Brook Parkway and Walter Hussey, 29, of 11 Riverside Ave., Danvers, jumped in their seats when Officer Richard C. Lavey opened their car door without warning, police said.

It's graduation season and hundreds of 17 and 18-year olds are heading into their last lazy Summer before adult challenges and realities hit. And there are other Somerville graduates who pursued their education through years of setbacks and numerous challenges. Adult graduates at SCALE overcame oppression and challenges to graduate last week and move on to the next phase of their education. At Full Circle High School and Next Wave Junior High School, adolescents trying to recover from setbacks are taught in a therapeutic community. |

A day after announcing plans to outsource 49 school custodian jobs to an outside contractor, Mayor Joseph Curtatone pleaded with the Board of Aldermen to support his decision, despite what he called "the human side." The issue came up near the end of a six-hour Finance Committee meeting last Wednesday, the setting where the board has been quizzing department heads on their budgets line by line. The board, which can only make cuts to the budget, has until the night of June 30 to finish deliberations before the next fiscal year starts. |

Police broke up a fight at the corner of Broadway and Temple June 14 and confiscated a 20-inch machete and a chain from two men who had allegedly been making gang signs with their hands.
Olman Moreno, 19, of 10 Memorial Rd., was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and a 16-year-old Somerville juvenile was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon.
