The Somerville Police Department held a Haunted House at the West District substation, 1154 Broadway on October 29th and 30th. This was a huge success with over 500 people going thru the Haunted House, and 300 treat bags given out to kids.

Jon DiBiaso simply made life miserable for the Somerville defense Friday night. The Everett quarterback passed for 241 yards along with five touchdowns as Everett cruised to a 42-14 win over the Highlanders at Everett Stadium.
With the loss, the Highlanders clinch a losing season, while falling to 2-6 and 1-2 in the GBL while Everett remains unbeaten at 8-0 overall.

An 18-month old child was in the backseat of a car stopped in connection with a heroin bust Nov. 3 in Somerville, police said.
Police said the child was in the car with two drug suspects stopped on Dana Street and caught with cocaine and heroin. The child was placed into temporary custody of family relatives and a report was filed with the state Department of Child and Family Services, police said.

Launched in October 2009, Prescription Drug Discount Card offers average savings of 20 percent; Somerville was first city in MA to offer the program

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Somerville Health Department Director Paulette Renault-Caragianes announced that, one year after the launch of the National League of Cities’ Prescription Drug Discount program, the City has seen more than $5,000 in savings to residents, and expects the program to continue to grow in the coming months. Offering an average of 23% savings per month individuals, the program is designed to help residents seeking relief from the high cost of prescription drugs. The City of Somerville was the first Massachusetts municipality to offer the program through the NLC.

Steve Almond’s prose walks a tightrope between irreverent humor and deeply felt sorrow. Half the time, Almond’s readers bust a gut laughing. The other half, he breaks their hearts.
The author of two story collections, a novel, and three books of nonfiction, his newest, “Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life”, offers Almond’s take on the experience of rock and roll “drooling fandom.” Meanwhile, his recently self-published works, “Letters from People Who Hate Me” and “This Won’t Take But a Minute Honey” have not only received sterling reviews from readers, but have also caught attention for his grass roots method of distributing them. Fortunately for me, I had a chance to talk with Almond about some of these things this week. Fortunately for you, you can catch him for yourself on Nov. 13 at The Somerville News Writer’s Festival.
