Today (Wednesday April 13) at the Somerville Theatre is the Business Town Meeting VI with Mayor Joe Curtatone, doors opens at 5 p.m., program begins 5:30, a question and answer period after the Mayor gives his talk on the city’s Business Economic Agenda. The sponsor is Middlesex Federal Savings Bank, a special networking reception at Johnny D’s produced by the Somerville Chamber of Commerce’s. A big thank you and note of appreciation to the postal ladies at the Winter Hill Post Office,  both of them always have a nice smile, and are always,  just as important very helpful to the public. Many times a week several of us from the paper are in and out of there, we thought we would mention how nice these ladies are, say hi to them with a smile and mention you read it here.  We know they are also great fans of our Ms. Cam’s Olio questions.

Students from Somerville High School attended a seminar April 6 hosted by Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone Jr. to educate them on the dangers of underage drinking.

Students from Somerville High School attended a seminar April 6 hosted by Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone Jr. to educate them on the dangers of underage drinking and operating motor vehicles while under the influence.

The speakers, including Deputy Chief of Police Michael Cabral, and Cory Mashburn of Prevention Services in addition to Leone, placed emphasis on both the short and long term consequences of a drunk driving conviction.

Fortunately, Teen Empowerment is offering Somerville teens a chance to add their voice to the discussions and debates that circle in this city each day. On April 16, if you care about hearing new views on old challenges, go to the Somerville High School auditorium for the fifth annual Somerville Youth Peace Conference.
 

Two arrested for drug deal on West Somerville street corner

Drug unit detectives watching a West Somerville street corner witnessed a drug deal April 5, police said.

Police said they saw a hand to hand exchange between Steven Aiello, 30, of 38 Prichard Ave., and Jaril Gauthier, 36, of 1302 Sandy Lane, Wilmington, at the corner of Kidder and Prichard Ave. Police said they learned the corner was being used as a site for drug dealing.

This event will include an open mic,refreshments,is free, and open to the public.

Steven Aiello, 30, of 38 Prichard Ave., April 6, 5:18 p.m., arrested at 65 Boston Ave. and charged with conspiracy to violate a drug law, distribution of a class B drug and drug violation near a school or park.

City launches second annual ‘Somerville Reads’ program

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Nancy Milnor, Executive Director of the Somerville Public Libraries, announced that the City of Somerville will launch its second “One City, One Book” campaign in April 2011.  “Somerville Reads” is a project that promotes literacy and community engagement by encouraging residents to read and discuss the same book.  The book selected for the 2011 program is The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, a novel that deals with the experiences of the Ganguli family, Indian immigrants adjusting to a new life in America.  Copies of the book are available for check out at all Somerville Public Library locations, and a variety of events and exhibits will take place beginning in late April and continuing through May.

Katie Couric will draw on her 30 years as a journalist to address the evolution of today’s news industry during the sixth annual Edward R. Murrow Forum on Issues in Journalism at Tufts University . The forum, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Monday, April 11, at 12 p.m. at Asean Auditorium, Cabot Intercultural Center on Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus.

Couric is the anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, 60 Minutes correspondent, host of @katiecouric, Glamour magazine columnist and former co-host of NBC’s Today Show. Jonathan M. Tisch (Tufts class of 1976), co-chairman of the board of Loews Corporation and CEO of its subsidiary, Loews Hotels, and the host of the Emmy-nominated television series Beyond the Boardroom with Jonathan Tisch, will lead the discussion with Couric. Tisch is a member of the Tufts board of trustees and the naming benefactor of Tufts’ Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service.
