Aldermen voted unanimously tonight to support a federal resolution that would give children of illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

Immigration advocates and their supporters applauded after the resolution was passed at tonight’s Board of Aldermen meeting.

The DREAM Act, under consideration in Congress, would give young people a chance to become legal residents or citizens if they attend college or serve in the military while meeting other requirements.

Somerville teenagers working as community organizers with Centro Presente and the Welcome Project spoke in support of the measure before the vote.

“Please support the Dream Act, it is the only chance I have to reach my goals,” said Gabriel, a senior at Somerville High School. “Without education and justice there’s no freedom.”

Alderman-at-Large Bill White said if the measure passes in Congress it would mean more opportunities for local youth. “In a city where we have a gang problem, this closes the door for gangs,” he said. “With this, you would be a fool to go in a gang when you can go to college and have a future.”
