September may be upon us, but lots of summertime fun can be had at the Saturday, September 10 SomerStreets event – Rolling on the Mystic. The festivities will take place from noon to 4 p.m. along Shore Drive.

Like the other SomerStreets events that have taken place this summer, the street will be closed to vehicular traffic and opened up for walking, biking and skating. Music, children’s activities and craft vendors all will be part of the mix, with the Mystic River set as the backdrop. Canoes will be available at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse.

“Sometimes people forget Somerville has a waterfront,” said Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone. “It’s a bit of a hidden treasure. It’s a place where you can experience that out-of-the-city feeling without ever actually leaving the city. And it’s a great location to have an open streets event.”

Thousands have attended each of the first three SomerStreets celebrations this year and Shore Drive was the site for the City’s first-ever SomerStreets event in 2010. New panels on the adjacent Mystic Avenue Mural will be unveiled during the event and a farmers’ market will take place just across Mystic Avenue from Shore Drive.

“We really love this location,” said City Communications Director Michael Meehan. “On top of everything else, the grassy area along the shoreline is an ideal spot for a family picnic. People can come out and really make a day of it.”

And with school back in session, this SomerStreets should be teeming with families. For the little ones, a marionette puppet show will take place at 2 p.m.

“This is one of the few civic events in this region with a primary family focus,” Curtatone said. “We try to offer a little bit of something for everyone, but SomerStreets is perfect for kids or anyone who wants to play like a kid for an afternoon.”
