Last week, the City of Somerville hosted a ribbon-cutting to mark the completion of the Tufts Street redesign and reconstruction and Leonard Grimes Park. The redesign included street improvements: a new mural and upgrades.
Speakers emphasized discouraging cut-through driving, prioritizing local use, and building a safer, more welcoming East Somerville. The goal is to reduce cut-through traffic, meaning non-local drivers seeking to bypass McGrath, create quieter, safer streets for neighbors and families traveling to school, and foster community identity.

Crashes are down. Serious injuries are down. “We haven’t had a fatality on our streets in over four years now,” said Mayor Wilson.
Beyond the streets, the centerpiece is a gorgeous new mural designed by Liz Lamanche. It features a calming, nature-themed design. The modular approach uses circular spots of color, enabling future neighborhood artists to add or replace elements. Neighbors report the mural makes the street more relaxing and fun.
