After 2 years and 400+ five-star reviews, husband-and-wife owners Isabel Thurston and Ryan Howe look to bring their mom-and-pop comedy club to the next level.
Goofs Comedy Club, the family-owned Somerville venue that has become the highest-rated comedy club in the country announced today that they have begun searching for a bigger location.
What started as a weekly comedy show in the basement of a community center is now one of Boston’s most beloved venues for standup comedy. Having quickly grown to a brick-and-mortar location in Somerville, MA, Goofs has gained 432 five-star Google Reviews within their first two years open, a record its owners believe is unmatched by any comedy club in the United States.
“We didn’t plan on the business growing so quickly. We started in the basement of the Cambridge Community Center, for goodness sake! We set out to run the best damn show in Boston. It was the audiences—people who love both standup and community—that built Goofs.
-Isabel Thurston, Co-Founder
Built by comedians and run by comedians
Owned and operated by its newly married founders, Goofs has vibe unlike any comedy club in the country. Audiences are truly treated like they’re entering the Thurston-Howe’s home, with hand-made ceviche and birria from their chef, Marlon, and owners that both perform and chat with audience members long after the shows are done.
Goofs filled its early lineups with headliners almost nobody had heard of — comedians the founders backed before the industry discovered them. Many of them now turn up on Kevin Hart’s Funny AF, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and every major streaming platform that produces stand-up.
“The Goofs model has always been booking people we believe are the funniest, regardless of how many followers they have, or how many tickets they sell. Watching these comedians build their own audiences and receive the acclaim they deserve has been one of the greatest joys of running our comedy club.”
-Ryan Howe, Co-Founder
What Goofs is looking for
Now Goofs is looking to expand again, having quickly outgrown its 1,800 square foot home. “The people of greater Boston love comedy, and our friends are now rising stars” Thurston says. “We want to provide a bigger home for both audiences and comics.” The company is actively speaking with landlords, commercial brokers, and prospective partners and investors.
