Daniel Goldsmith.

Daniel Goldsmith, Managing Director of Somerville, Massachusetts-based Julius Education, met with staffers from Sen. Ed Markey’s (D-Mass.) office to share how local startups like Julius Education leverage artificial intelligence (AI), and discuss the need for balanced AI regulation that promotes startup success. Goldsmith, whose company uses AI to provide a deep understanding of labor market data to help organizations and job seekers keep up with the pace of change, emphasized the importance of including small businesses in AI policy discussions.

Goldsmith’s visit occurred against a backdrop of intense discussion among federal and state lawmakers about regulating AI, and a flurry of legislative proposals. Goldsmith explained to lawmakers how entrepreneurs use AI-powered software to grow their businesses, and how misguided legislation could stifle innovation in small AI-powered companies.

“It was an honor meeting with members of Sen. Markey’s office to discuss how important AI is to startups like mine,” said Goldsmith. “Small AI-powered businesses must be included in policy discussions to help lawmakers better understand AI technology and create smart AI legislation that benefits all Americans.”

Goldsmith was one of nine small business leaders who came to Washington with the AI Salon [2], an organization dedicated to advancing AI innovation and optimism.

“I commend Daniel for highlighting the benefits of AI for Markey,” said Kyle Shannon, president of the AI Salon. “Lawmakers often regulate AI out of fear, missing the opportunity to protect the countless businesses that use AI to better their communities. I urge policymakers to sit down with their local startup founders to learn about AI’s benefits and uses so they can craft legislation that promotes positive AI innovation.”
