Our View of the Times – October 18

On October 18, 2023, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

Whatever one’s feelings may be regarding the relative merits of the city’s SomerStreets events, one thing is clear: a good number of people end up having a really great time for themselves.

For many, the best is saved for last. That, of course, is embodied in the Monster Mashed event that brings out the kid in everyone who gets involved.

There’s plenty of family fun to be had with activities from Parkour, Event Them, and Knucklebones.

A Crafts and Vintage market will be featured with goods from Blue Bandana Relics and Tiny Turns Paperie.

Some bemoan the many street closures that take place throughout the year for similar events, road races, etc. There are valid points of view on both ends of the issue. It only seems reasonable, though, to partake in the festivities as long as they are there for the partaking. A little giving in can feel good, in comparison to not participating at all.

For those who enjoy these types of events, this closing edition of SomerStreets serves as a fun and festive farewell to the series and a somewhat melancholy reminder that the cold wintery months will soon be upon us.

It all takes place on Sunday, October 22 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. – with a rain date of October 29 – on Somerville Ave. between School St. to Warren Ave.

Make sure to dress up in your best Halloween costume and show it off at the Halloween Parade led by School of Honk.

So, let’s get out there and enjoy the best days of the season while they are here. They won’t last forever.
