The Lady Anchors Basketball Team found their winning ways once again by defeating Nazareth from Wakefield 51-29 this week. The game began with a 16-2 route capped by the playing of eighth grade point guard Jess Popken (of Medford) and senior power forward Christy Novembre (of Cambridge).

The defense was the forefront of this match. The full court press delivered easy baskets on the other side of the floor.

“Turnovers create easy offense for our team and gives us confidence,” said head coach Shawn Thornton. The Lady Anchors took a 29-12 halftime lead and by then sailed to the victory. Novembre led all scores with 24 points in limited action and Popken with 15.

Other notables include senior center Tahisha Bazile (Medford) grabbing a team high 15 rebounds and sophomore Allison Caloggero (Medford) adding 8 points and 4 steals. The team will host Lowell Catholic Friday night in a showdown for first place at the Anchordome at 6:30.

“Lowell Catholic is a very tough match up based on their skilled positions and excellent basketball knowledge including a deep bench. It will be a challenge for sure,” said Thornton.
