Call me crazy, but this is why the call to abolish police is headed nowhere. There is real crime and it requires policing. I haven’t heard anyone step up with a plan for how to handle things after we abolish the police and a pregnant woman gets shot.

I call you crazy because you seem to believe that more than the tiniest minority of those advocating for police reform are calling for “abolishing” police departments. Most are seeking demilitarization, adherence to stricter standards of conduct, and the restructuring of funding that benefits the communities that are supposed to be served and protected. I get the idea that you’re functioning in some kind of right wing talking points fog. Snap out of it.

  3. Gaspar Fomento says:

Right. Like the present fully funded police force had any special ability to prevent this shooting. Have another drink, pal.

This is the problem when people people resort to stupid slogans (“defund police”) to describe what is actually a good concept. Stupid people see the stupid slogan and, not bothering to consider what it actually refers to, write a comment like above. Not even the more nitwitty of my fellow liberals is actually proposing getting rid of the police.

Hey people time to start paying attention. Getting rid of the police isn’t some fringe position Councilor JT Scott has stated he wants to completely defund the police department and he chairs the city council finance committee. Seems his “blow up the city budget” rhetoric isn’t going over well with the Mayor and JT is ready to take it out on all of us. Councilor Ben Ewen Campen already proposed disbanding part of the police department and replacing it with social workers which would put it on 911 operators to decide whether you get a cop or not. Clearly this kid needs to experience some real life. To them making sure our police are best positioned to serve people like this poor woman who was shot not as important as the ideology and the revolution. You know they won’t be out marching for her.

That’s quite a tale you weave. Assuming you’re actually trying to pass it off as factual, would you care to cite the source(s) of your…erm…”information”?

  7. Casimir H. Prohosky Jr. says:

    [crickets]

    That’s what I thought.

  8. Villenous says:

I spend most of time getting called a socialist, but even socialists have cops. We’re not having a serious discussion about this issue until we get down to what happens when someone gets shot (and this is not the first shooting incident the city has experienced in recent weeks). “Defund” and “abolish” are superficial takes on a serious issue. Even in a relatively safe city we are a long way from zero crime.

  9. JanetPlanet says:

Hey Casimir watch out your privilege is showing. Everyone isn’t sitting around waiting to respond to you.

It’s all out in the open in newsletters and on our politicians twitter postings.

  10. Casimir H. Prohosky Jr. says:

    Snappy comeback.

    *yawn*

Everyone is, however, noticing that you didn’t actually cite any real sources at all. It’s no secret or surprise just what sort of “newsletters” and “politicians twitter postings” you’re referencing, assuming they even exist at all.

    Quit while you’re behind.

“Newsletters” = “The other” Somerville “newspaper”?

    No doubt.
