Our View of the Times – July 23

For some, it’s a clear-cut case of following the law or breaking the law. For others, human compassion overrides these concerns, and there seems to be no other way than to aid and protect those who are in the most need of help.

The sanctuary city issue has come to a head with the federal government’s new policy of these cities going along with its mass deportation efforts or else lose federal funding.

Recently, the mayors of both Chelsea and Somerville filed a preliminary injunction to curtail this policy, on the grounds that it violates the city’s Constitutional rights.

It’s not as if we hadn’t had enough divisive rhetoric thrust upon us during the recent political campaigns. Now it seems as though the divisions just keep widening as issues such as this one keep tensions and suspicions at never-before-seen levels of intensity.

Reasonable fears exist among those who would prefer not to take the risks that go along with letting undocumented immigrants settle in the community. Most of us want to live peaceful and secure lives without the need to look over our shoulders or wonder who among those we pass on the street may or may not be worthy of our trust.

On the other hand, a case can be made for having faith and putting ourselves on the line for the sake of humanitarian generosity and kindness. After all, America has always been a refuge for those seeking safety and a chance at prosperity.

The steadfast resolve of our local leaders is noteworthy. However one feels about the issue, their dedication to the human factor must be applauded.
