The Kiwanis Club of Somerville was proud to honor three special members at their Legion of Honor luncheon on Thursday, June 21. The Legion of Honor recognizes individuals who have been Kiwanis members for 25 years and every five years thereafter. These members have each dedicated hundreds of volunteer hours supporting Kiwanis programs and projects that benefit local children, seniors and other organizations that make our community a better place to live.

A scrappy looking man, with a weathered face and ice blue eye, sits in a collapsible chair in a furniture-less warehouse. His name is Marky Pantanella, and he was an opioid addict. Like many of his kind, now with a shrunken circle of childhood friends. “I feel like I’m the last man standing,” he remarked to the camera. Pantanella is featured in a film called Runnin’, directed by his childhood friend, and STAT journalist, Alex Hogan.

The Somerville Mathematics Fund is pleased to announce the winners of their renewable mathematics scholarships for 2018. The Math Fund was founded to celebrate and encourage math achievement and these students deserve to be celebrated for their work in math and science while in high school. Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and a few organizations, this year we were able to award a record 8 scholarships, totaling $32,000 over four years.

What is more exciting to the young heart and mind than that savory and unrivaled treat, summer vacation? A well-deserved reward for all the hard work and irreplaceable time invested in the previous school year.
As adults, we can look back fondly on those golden days with a warm sense of nostalgia and a longing to return to the carefree days that linger now only in our memories. And yet, we can live those times again vicariously as we engage with the present younger generation who will be making its own special memories.
