On Saturday, September 11, at approximately 11:15 p.m., police responded to an Ash Avenue residence for a report of vandalism. Police found that the house, as well as a number of motor vehicles at this location and in the area, had been tagged with spray paint that referenced two local gang rivalries “MP45” and Port 44, “LGBTQK”, and other anti-Semitic graffiti drawings.

Five polling places that moved in 2020 remain at same locations

As a reminder, three of Somerville’s polling places have been relocated as of the current 2021 election cycle. All other polling locations will remain in the same location as they were in 2020. Before voting in the September 14 preliminary election, don’t forget to double-check your polling location.

Somerville Media Center 9/11 20th Anniversary Remembrance Video

The Somerville Media Center is honored to participate in the 9/11 Flag of Honor Across America Memorials. This event marks the 20th anniversary of the horrific events of September 11, 2001 in New York City, at the Pentagon and in the fields of Pennsylvania which resulted in the deaths of 2,983 people. Readers of our portion of names are members of the Greater Somerville community.

Thanks to the generosity of Cradles to Crayons and Staples, Somerville Public Schools students are kicking off the school year and the return to their school buildings ready to learn. Through their Ready for Learning initiative, long-time community partner Cradles to Crayons donated 2,400 backpacks filled with school supplies for students from across the district, and StaplesConnect Somerville donated close to 1,500 boxed school supply kits. Community partners like Cradles to Crayons and StaplesConnect are among the many organizations committed to supporting Somerville students every year, and to making a positive difference in their communities. We are grateful for their ongoing support and partnership.

Because West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in surrounding communities, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has raised Somerville’s WNV risk to high. To date, no WNV has been detected in Somerville.

Residents should take precautions to protect themselves against mosquito bites and mosquito-borne diseases, including WNV and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

By an unanimous vote of the Somerville Board of Health, the local eviction moratorium is extended until April 30 of next year.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the City of Somerville’s Department of Veterans’ Services invite residents to join the annual procession and memorial ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Anyone interested in joining the procession should meet at the Cedar Street end of the Community Path at 9:30 a.m. At approximately 10 a.m. there will be a speaking program and the presentation and retiring of the colors by the Somerville Police and Somerville Fire Honor Guards at the 9/11 memorial in Davis Square.
