The Somerville Museum and Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS) are pleased to announce they will host a Reading Frederick Douglass event on Thursday, June 30th at 4:30pm at Bow Market. Alongside Somerville Museum and CAAS, Mass Humanities announced grants to 20 nonprofits to host public readings and discussions of Frederick Douglass’ famous speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” this summer across Massachusetts.

Green and Orange Line Service resuming, effective immediately

Following a comprehensive inspection of the infrastructure by internal and third party engineers and safety experts, an intensive assessment of the repair work performed, and subsequent testing of trains in the tunnels, the MBTA’s team of structural engineers have determined it is safe for both Orange and Green Line train services to resume, effective immediately.

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) has awarded John O’Neill Scholarships to support the higher education of four local students.

Established in 2017 to honor longtime SCES Executive Director John O’Neill, the scholarship benefits outstanding students from Cambridge and Somerville who are pursuing studies in elder services, health care, advocacy, or policy work.

Defendant allegedly attempted to bribe police chief in order to secure local approval for marijuana retail establishment

A Somerville attorney was arrested today on charges that he engaged in a scheme to bribe the Medford Chief of Police.

Sean O’Donovan, 54, was indicted on two counts of honest services wire fraud and one count of bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds. O’Donovan will make an initial appearance in federal court in Boston this afternoon.

Wires down on Essex Street in Somerville

At approximately 9:00 a.m. this morning a street sweeper was caught in very low hanging wires on Essex St. The pole and live wires fell on the sweeper trapping the driver inside. 

A technical response by the Somerville Fire Department was dispatched. For safety reasons, Eversource was notified to  shut down power in that area.
