A fire broke out at 60 Highland Rd around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon. First company called smoke showing, a working fire was stuck by C-3, additional apparatus was requested to help at the scene.

No report of injuries, unknown how many are displaced at this time.

Cause of fire is under investigation.

Update: All ideas for Somerville’s first-ever Participatory Budgeting process are due by end of day Saturday, May, 20, 2023. This is also the deadline for residents interested in becoming a Budget Delegate volunteer to submit their applications.

Center Stage Festival is a family-friendly event to honor and celebrate Asian American Heritage Month. The festival will include cookies with Cambridge’s city manager, dance and musical performances, art activities, vendors, Asian catering and more. The festival will take place at The Foundry, located at 101 Rogers St. Cambridge, MA. All are welcome to attend.

Show Me The Funny: Stand Up Comedy Workshop (Somerville Edition) is led by Cedric Arno and will review the history of comedy while encouraging confidence and skills.

Parama Chattopadhyay has worked at East Somerville Community School since July 2022 as a Pre-Calculus, Statistics, and Geometry teacher for the Calculus Project, an innovative national program serving minorities and aspiring them to become mathematical masterminds. She then continued at the school that she is so fond of as an interim 8th grade certified math teacher covering a colleague’s paternity leave, and now as a general instructional support staff.

The Just-in-Time Initiative welcomes back Cambridge, MA Police Commissioner Christine Eloe.  Commissioner Eloe will speak about community, youth and violence. 

Denise Cosby and family will recognize the 14th year of her son Justin D. C. Cosby’s murder.  The Initiative will also share information about surviving murder and “The Call” that no family ever wishes to receive.

Somerville Police officers were dispatched to Trader Joe’s on Middlesex Avenue last Sunday on reports of a fight with possible injuries.

Upon arrival, the officers observed a heavyset male, later identified as Frederick Marmolejos, standing over a man identified as the victim of the incident. Marmolejos reportedly had both hands grabbing the front of the victim’s shirt.

In honor of Haiti’s Flag Day, the Somerville Office of Immigrant Affairs and the Haitian Club will be hosting a parade and official raising of Haiti’s flag. The parade will start from Somerville Public Library and end at Somerville City Hall. Immediately after the parade there will be remarks from Mayor Ballantyne, Leptune Paul, Haitian Services Coordinator, and other community leaders. At the end of remarks, the Haitian flag will be raised.
