Last week the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, Somerville’s Greek Orthodox Church, celebrated another milestone in its century-long mission of communion and community. Although the Church has been planning a renovation for six years, a September 2021 a fire resulted in extensive smoke and water damage to the church’s interior and its electrical system.

The City of Somerville Legislative Matters Committee, met with five items on the agenda to discuss the following. The enforcement of annual reporting on the ordinance to safeguard vulnerable road users. As well as the code of ordinances being amended by requiring the mayor to annually submit a report on housing status to the Legislative Matters Committee.

Four new Firefighters graduate Academy

Four new Somerville firefighters successfully graduated from the Boston Fire Regional Academy on May 11, 2023. They have received their assignments and will report to fire companies this week. Pictured are (L to R) Zachary Avery, Joseph Nutile, Chief Charles Breen, Mark Scullari and Mark Atwater. 

 

 

Porch fire on Central Street in Somerville

Shortly after 6 a.m. this morning the Somerville Fire Alarm Office struck Box 349 for a reported house fire at 130 Central Street. Engine 2 cleared from a call two blocks away and ordered a 2nd Alarm on arrival upon finding heavy fire conditions on the top floor rear porch. The fire ultimately went to 3 Alarms requiring mutual aid assistance from surrounding departments. Fortunately nearby houses suffered only exterior damage from the radiant heat.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Group 2 was working.

Groups from all over Somerville will be testifying on May 25th at a City Council public hearing about their negative experiences with the city planning process for real estate development in their neighborhoods.  Residents claim that they are encouraged to participate with the promise that they can determine the future of their community.  Instead, their contributions are ignored or altered by the city’s planners in order to cater to the proposals of real estate developers.

One Union Square greeted with encouraging public response

The Hamilton Company announced today that it is encouraged by supportive public comments and the overall response from Somerville residents at a May 18 city-sponsored public hearing to discuss the company’s One Union Square development.
