As
citywide permit parking finally took hold on Jan. 4, even extended
hours at Somerville's Traffic and Parking Department office couldn't
keep lines from stretching out the door as residents filed last-minute
applications for permits.

The new regulations come in the wake
of a contentious debate that began in May, when the Traffic Commission
announced that the one-third of the city without permit parking would
be converted on Aug. 1. A task force convened by Mayor Joe Curtatone in
the wake of public outcry eventually suggested the transition be put on
hold until after the winter holidays.

Newstalk for January 6

On January 6, 2010, in Uncategorized, by The News Staff

The
234th anniversary of the raising of the first Union Flag was this past
New Years day, great weather and crowd considering last year's event.
It was also nice to see that it wasn't as political in the speeches.
The ceremony was very nice and well planned out and everyone involved
deserves a nice round of applause. This year it was done at noon –
seems to be getting later and later in the day as the years go on but
it looked like everyone enjoyed themselves.

It
seems odd all the crazy weather we have been having lately. The good
news is that a lot of the fighting amongst the different political
sects in the city has quieted down some – maybe that's because there is
no primary election locally, maybe that's because the craziness of the
budget has passed, maybe people have taken a well deserved vacation –
who knows what the reasons are, frankly.

Some smaller, more
fractional people in various groups will always sit in the corner and
bang on their gong to a negative beat, no matter how many times you
have proven them wrong, no matter how many times they make themselves
look like unintelligent buffoons. And that's a shame, because even
though the economy isn't so great, there is plenty to be thankful for
here in Somerville.

Davis

thing only: the Irish super group U2.

On January 5, 2010, in Uncategorized, by The News Staff

By Tom Nash

State
Senator Anthony Galluccio resigned from his seat late Tuesday after
receiving a one-year prison term for violating his probation on a
hit-and-run conviction.

Galluccio appeared in Cambridge District
Court on Jan. 4 to testify he did not have alcohol in his system when
he failed a breathalyzer test on Dec. 21. He had been under 24-hour
house arrest since Dec. 18 following a guilty plea on an October
hit-and-run charge.

On Oct. 4, Galluccio injured a 13-year-old
Cambridge boy when he rear-ended a minivan. According to a police
report, he had been driven home by police early that morning after a
gas station attendant determined he was too drunk to drive.

Police
officers at the Somerville Police Department East District Neighborhood
Station are currently on duty after a former attendant recently
retired. Until a replacement is found, uniformed police officers will
be there to attend desk duties and help people who arrive with local
neighborhood issues.

The East District Neighborhood Station is
one of two stations located in Somerville. The other police sub-station
is located in Teele Square. These stations are valuable to Somerville
citizens because it gives people an opportunity to talk to officers one
on one instead of just on the phone.

Monday
at 12:15 p.m. mourners gathered at the Mount Auburn Cemetery in
Cambridge as the body of a Tedeschi convenience store employee, a
Somerville resident, was laid to rest after being brutally murdered by
an alleged robber last week in Jamaica Plains. Nepalese clerk, Surendra
Dangol, 39, was shot and killed after surrendering the money to the
alleged robber, who is still at large.

Dangol's relatives were
originally denied visas to attend the funeral but thanks to the
determination  of Congressmen Michael Capuano of
Somerville, the man's wife and daughter were arranged a flight to the
United States from India.
