Seconds after Ferdinand Saintville was murdered outside Good Times in April 2007, the killer and his friends immediately began a plot to evade authorities and hide the crime, according to prosecutors.

In January, their plot may have worked when the confessed killer was sentenced to just five years in prison.

Fans of the Mystic River began the long fight against invasive water chestnuts Saturday, going out in canoes to pull the plant out by hand.

Now is the best time to pick these water chestnuts, said Commodore Michael Silvestro of the Riverside Yacht Club. They are small, so they are easier to pick and easier to dispose of.

A 21-year-old Somerville man went on a car break-in spree early Saturday morning, stealing religious icons, GPS units, prescription pills and more, police said.

Tyler Burgess, of 87 Highland Rd., was caught running out of the driveway at 213 Cedar St. as a victim shouted to police, "That's him. He's the guy who broke into my car," according to police.

City asks Somerville residents to weigh in on budget

As Mayor Joseph Curtatone confronts an estimated $8.1 million budget gap, the city is seeking input from residents about their priorities as his administration eyes how to cut costs.

A survey has been put online asking residents to choose from nine budget priorities, and also seeks opinions on how services can be improved without increasing costs.

As 10 city employees lose their jobs, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone is reshuffling his City Hall staff.

Mike Buckley is returning as an administrative assistant to Curtatone, replacing Matt Dias, who is moving up to director of Traffic and Parking on July 1.

Dias replaces former Acting Police Chief Bob Bradley.

Buckley, who previously worked as highway superintendent for the city, returns to Curtatone's office after a stint as chief of staff to Everett Mayor Carlo Di Maria.

 

18 city jobs cut in Somerville

City officials eliminated 10 employees and eight vacant positions this week, claiming it will save cash-strapped departments close to $1 million as the city struggles with an $8 million budget gap.
