After a promising start, the Somerville High School girls volleyball team continues to search for victories.
Following a tough 3-0 loss to Lawrence Sept. 27, the Highlanders responded with a strong effort against Everett on Wednesday. Even with a 1-0 lead, the Highlanders couldn’t secure the victory en route to a 3-1 loss to the Crimson Tide on Wednesday night. Finishing the week at 0-2, the Highlanders have now dipped to 1-7 overall.

A raindrop looking down on Somerville would not see many cushy places to fall. That’s because about three-quarters of the land in Somerville – 73 percent, according to Somerville’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment – is impermeable to water, making Somerville the most water resistant city in the region.
Instead of being absorbed, rain that falls on these surfaces, mainly pavement and rooftops, drains into the city’s storm water and sewer system, which, as the July flash floods showed, can’t always handle that much water.

Detectives recovered a gun and a variety of drugs in a raid on a Hamlet Street drug house Saturday, police said.
Police executed a warrant to search Christopher J. Federico, 21, and his home at 31 Hamlet St. and allegedly found Federico in his driveway selling OxyContin to Dennis Orellana, 23, of 353 Washington St.

Shannon Clark has been named the next varsity girls basketball coach in place of Harris, who was not recommended for a return to the sidelines last year despite 260 wins and seven Greater Boston league titles in 18 seasons.

Somerville teens recently had the chance to say whatever they wanted to the Mayor and other local officials, and a number of them took full advantage.
A small but engaged crowd of young people showed up to the Somerville Youth Summit on September 29, to get face time with a 12-member panel that included Mayor Joe Curtatone, Acting Police Chief Michael Cabral, and other key people from city departments and organizations that touch the lives of Somerville youth. Lara Jimenez, a senior at Somerville High School, acted as moderator.

Sunday afternoon hundreds of people flocked to Columbia Street to celebrate Nissenbaum’s Used Auto Parts’ 100th anniversary. Folks of all ages came to enjoy good food and music and got a chance to see almost 50 Antique cars. Kids had fun playing in the bouncy house and taking pictures with “OT” the friendly giant bird-monster.

The Somerville High Football team suffered a tough 26-0 loss to No.1 ranked Xaverian on a soggy Friday night at Dilboy Field

On a rainy night, the Somerville High School football team was left out in the cold Friday.
Joe Colton led the way, rushing for a pair of touchdowns as No.1 ranked Xaverian cruised to a 26-0 shutout win over the Highlanders in the non-league match at Dilboy Field.
With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 1-3 overall while the Hawks remained unbeaten at 4-0.
The Highlanders are in the midst of a three game losing streak, scoring just seven points in that span.

The City of Somerville is seeking local artists to design a new, City TV logo for Channels 13/16 programming. The new logo would be shown on all City TV programs, on the City website and in local print media. The logo should reproduce well in newsprint, but use of color is strongly encouraged. The new logo should include the numbers 13/16 to represent City TV channels, as well as the City’s name. Top entries will also convey the City’s use of web media.
