Somerville Police: Bank robber waited in line before heist

Police are looking for a man they say robbed the Citizens Bank in Davis Square Saturday morning.

The suspect is described by police as a white male in his 30s about five foot nine, with brown hair and a medium build. Police said he stopped in the foyer area before walking into the bank and pulled up his jacket or shirt to cover his face. He then entered the bank and walked behind a customer in line, they said.

In 2007, Senior Christy Novembre (Cambridge) walked into Saint Clement High School nervous and anxious like any other student entering freshman year.  Novembre received her class schedule, bought textbooks, and walked the hallways unaware she would meet a very important person.  That person was her coach, and current Athletic Director, Shawn Thornton.  Mr. Thornton is also the Physical Education and Health teacher at Saint Clement School.  As Christy’s health teacher, Shawn couldn’t believe how she handled herself in the classroom but was more impressed with her skills on the basketball court.

Laura Oliver, 48, of 79 Derby St., Nov. 29, 11:49 a.m., arrested at 299 Broadway and charged with shoplifting.

Bruno Santos, 30, of 218 Rangeway Road, Billerica, Nov. 29, 1:09 p.m., arrested at 254 Somerville Ave. and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and furnishing a false name or social security number and warrant charges.

Ryan Harrington, 26, of 113 Ten Hills Road, Nov. 29, 6:51 p.m., arrested at his home on warrant charges.

A drunken homeless man told a robbery victim who tried calling for help, “Calling the police won’t stop a knife in your chest,” during a robbery attempt on McGrath Highway Friday, according to police.

Michael Cisternelli, 27, was arrested and charged with attempt to commit a crime and attempted armed robbery after a Somerville police officer witnessed the altercation, police said. Police said he had slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol.

Soccer star Morais named league MVP

With the fall season officially in the books, a multitude of Somerville High School athletes were awarded Greater Boston League all-star status.

Homero Morias, who emerged as a dominant force on the soccer field, earned the Greater Boston League’s Most Valuable Player award along with being named to the Boston Globe and Boston Herald Division 1 All-Scholastic Boys Soccer team. John Wallace was named to the espn.com All-State All-Star Football squad.

City TV logo contest winner announced

Somerville resident Linda Sacenti submitted winning design for new City TV logo to be used on City TV Channels 13/16

The Executive Office of Communications today unveiled the winner of the 2010 City TV logo contest, Ms. Linda Sacenti, a Somerville resident and freelance videographer for the City.  Sacenti’s design was selected from a number of entries, for her use of the Grand Union Flag – which first flew over Somerville in 1776 – and web technology for the channel’s streaming video capabilities.  The new logo will be shown on City TV programs (channel 13 on RCN, 16 on Comcast), on the City website and in local print media, and aired in syndication on Cambridge City TV.

It is  December. Wasn’t it just summer? Weren’t we just complaining about the humidity?  Wasn’t I just cruising around our campsite in my tricked out golf cart ?

Yes, it’s Christmas time , the most wonderful time of the year. But now there is something new to complain about.  The traffic wars have been kicked up a notch and moved into the mall parking lots. This is a true battle zone that drivers have to contend with. And it is brutal.

A Mighty ‘Wake Up’ call from local reggae artist

Somerville reggae artist Mighty Mystic’s anticipated Wake Up World album touched stores Nov. 23 with messages of hope and peace for listeners.

Before the album was released “I alone” and “Wake Up the World” received airplay on local reggae stations teasing fans for the album. And since his most well-known track Riding On the Clouds was released, fans couldn’t wait to hear more.

Action needed on Assembly Square

On Thursday, the Board of Aldermen will be taking a vote which will determine the future of Assembly Square. In front of the board is a District Improvement Financing (DIF) plan, designed to provide $25 million to build the infrastructure (roads, utilities and an Assembly Square T station) necessary for development to go forward.
