St. Clement improved to 2-0 after the Anchormen toppled the Old Colony Crusaders 35-6 this past Saturday at Dilboy Stadium. Both teams came out with strong defenses to start the game resulting in two turnovers in just the first three plays of the game.

The Somerville High School Freshman Girl’s Volleyball team had a big win on Monday, September 19, vs. Cambridge in three sets.
The Lady Highlanders lost the first set with a score of 22-25. “They were flat after the weekend. They just weren’t moving in that first set and their serves were off,” said Coach Invernizzi.

Recently New York City poet Linda Lerner visited the Boston area and revisited my Somerville Community Access TV show Poet to Poet: Writer to Writer. Linda has taught English in the City College of New York system for many years, and has lived the life of poet. Her first priority is her writing and has lived her life to accommodate this, often at the expense of financial security. She has been published widely, and has just released an accomplished collection of poetry titled Takes Guts and Years Sometimes. (NYQ Books).

There was only one game last week, a 4-1 win at Malden. Highlights of the game included strong performances by sophomore Rachael Berry (one goal, three assists) and junior Natalie Henrique (two goals, one assist). Somerville went up 2-0 early and could have had a few more goals before halftime, when the score was 2-1. Malden scored on a fantastic shot from about 30 yards out that found the top corner of the net.

Somerville police responded to a report of suspicious activity at Trina’s Starlite Lounge on Beacon Street in the early hours of last Wednesday.
Upon arrival, police reportedly spotted three men preparing to put empty beer kegs and cases of empty beer bottles into a car. The car was approximately ten feet from the curb, and on the sidewalk there were four empty beer kegs and approximately 23 cases of empty beer bottles according to police. A shopping cart full of boxes containing empty beer bottles was also found nearby, police said.

Hands of Women is a poem from Laurie Soriano’s first full-length collection of poetry entitled CATALINA ( Lummox Press). This 112 page book packs quite a wallop in addition to featuring a very nice preface by singer/songwriter Cris Wiliamson of Seattle, WA. “She is a master of a particular punch at the end of all the lines, which she lays out perfectly, and then comes that uppercut which slays you. She is a marvel to read, and my joy to brag on her every chance I get.”

State paints 9,000 linear feet of street and improves signage as part of pedestrian safety project.
In an effort to make it easier to step out all across Somerville, MassDot crews have undertaken a $15,000 project to paint more than 9,000 linear feet of local roads and have added new pedestrian signage at various locations in the city. The new street markings involved pedestrian crosswalks and stop lines for vehicular traffic.
