Well…I was glad to be included in the poetry anthology Last Call: The Bukowski Legacy Continues. I know many a Somerville writer has cited the Buk–(the late, dirty old man of poetry)–and he remains an inspiration to the non-mandarins of the poetry world to this day. Reviewer and Somerville Bagel Bard Dennis Daly, a former columnist for The Salem News, piped in with this article.

The St. Clement Lady Anchors finished 8-12 on the season just shy of a playoff berth, tying for fourth in the Catholic Central League. The team had a tough non-league schedule going 0-6 facing Ursuline, Austin Prep, and Maimonides, but collected lots of experience as they look to build for next year. The team will graduate only three seniors, Elva Martinez, Diana Tran, and Beatrice Boisvert. “We had an incredibly young team this year. I knew it was going to be a rough start and knew the seniors we had were great leaders and we would be a totally different team in February then we were in December.” Head Coach Alyssa Jann looks ahead to next year excitedly, “We obviously have some big gaps to fill, but I could not be more excited about the potential of all the underclassman. We have so many kids contributing at this point, next year teams are going to have a hard time choosing who to stop!” Jann is a native of Westford and played Division 1 Basketball for Quinnipiac. She was named Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 while at Westford Academy.

Somerville’s Council on Aging held celebrations last week to celebrate Grandparents Day. Grandparents were invited to invite their grandchildren and in some cases grandchildren and great-grandchildren to a day of crafts. Janine Lotti, Senior Project Manager and Vilma Sullivan, Somerville’s own master gardener, led a project at each center in decorating planters and planting seeds for some fresh herbs and vegetables to enjoy this spring!

Wednesday was George Washington’s official birthday. Mother Washington’s little bundle of cherry tree cutting, powdered wig wearing, coin tossing across The Potomac, joy arrived on this date back in 1732. George is the father of our country. The nation’s first big cahoona. I’d like to thank George Washington for all he did for our beloved United States of America, but most of all for giving us a day off from work. I hope you also had a day off on Monday.

Since the recession hit, families around the country have been struggling to make ends meet. It is still extremely difficult to find employment, and many people who are employed are working more hours for less money. Families are finding it difficult to pay their bills. Even though this winter has been mild so far, families may find that they do not have the money to pay for their heating costs. However, help is available at the Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS).

Police were dispatched to the Family Dollar store on Somerville Ave. last Sunday in response to an alleged shoplifter attempting to leave the store.
Upon their arrival officers were met by the store manager, who informed them that she had observed two females walking in the store and putting items in their bags. At that time she contacted another employee to check the surveillance video to see if their activities were caught on tape and they reportedly were, according to police.
