Ida Azzolino is now 100 years young.

About 150 relatives and friends celebrated this past Saturday the 100th Birthday of Ida Azzolino.

A huge crowd crunched into the Masonic Hall on Highland Avenue to have lunch and celebrate with Ida.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid  took part in the promotion ceremony of his former military fellow, Army Major Michael K. Lynch. Senator Reid was joined by Major Lynch’s parents, Joseph and Joan Lynch of Dracut, Massachusetts, and other former military fellows. “I am honored to have a military fellow work in my office each year, and Mike Lynch, a former fellow, served with great distinction,” said Reid. “Major Lynch has exhibited qualities of bravery and honor and I have no doubt that he will be an effective leader in the United States Army for years to come.”

We certainly take pride in the creativity and industrious nature of our fellow citizens and institutions. It’s basic human nature to want to take stock in what we value and celebrate these things with one another. But just how much celebrating is necessary on the whole, and at what cost?

The Somerville News Person of the Week, Eugene Leonard III.

Meet Eugene Leonard III, resident here in the ‘Ville, as well as self-employed and in business with his father. It’s “Gene” to his friends, and he’s got a lot going on here in Somerville. He is a very nice, kind hearted guy who is down to earth and genuine. He is originally from Winchester, but moved here to Somerville to help his father in his real estate business. Gene’s sort of like a handyman, a guy who knows how to do a little of everything. He likes collecting and talking about old records and the latest artists on the rise. To get back into what was common with everyone back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, and find good prices on some real antique albums.

This past Saturday, September 29, Mayor Joseph Curtatone and the Somerville Veteran’s Services Department dedicated the new memorial square located at the intersection of Miller and Sacramento Streets in honor of Richard Charles Clark. Clark served during the Korean War era from 1951 to 1954. His family, friends and elected officials were in attendance at the ceremony to celebrate the event. Girls Soccer

The St. Clement Girls Soccer team improved their overall record to 3-6 by shocking Catholic Central League rival Pope John High School 4 to 1. Sophomore standout Taisha Dupree continued her impressive start to the season scoring two goals. Senior captains Jessie Jepson (Somerville) and Maria Martinez (Medford) each scored a goal as well to pace the anchors. Next up for the girls was Lynn Technical High School. This game was a hard fought game by both teams. Sophomore goalie Krystal Coccimiglio made some phenomenal saves to record yet another shutout. But Krystal would not have been able to do this without the help of sophomore sweeper Amanda Andre (Medford) who was able to hold off almost all of Lynn Techs offensive attacks with a stellar defensive performance. Sophomore Taisha Dupree (Everett) scored the lone goal for the anchors. Unfortunately the Lady Anchors ran into a tough Innovation Charter School to end the week. But the girls are looking to keep improving as they have every week so far this season under the tutelage of veteran coach Kevin Conlin.

Marie Coady, 62, of 4 Washington Ave., September 24, 7:56 a.m., arrested at home on a warrant charge of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor.

Manuel Leal, 32, of 344 Summer St., Malden, September 24, 9:01 p.m., arrested at Mystic Ave. on charges of giving a false name and speeding.

Somerville Police are investigating an indecent assault and battery that occurred in theDavis Square area Monday evening.  At about 8 p.m., a 32-year- old woman was walking from the Davis Square MBTA station to a nearby address.  She exited the station through the rear of theHolland Street side.  She proceeded to walk up Dover Street toward Cambridge while talking on her cell phone when she was approached from behind by an unknown suspect who indecently assaulted her.  The victim turned around, saw the suspect and screamed while running into the street.  The suspect immediately fled in the direction of Davis Square.  The victim was not injured and required no medical treatment.
