The Kiwanis Club of Somerville recently installed its Officers and Directors for 2012-2013. The new President of Kiwanis is local attorney Isaac Machada who is taking over from Patricia Ng of Century 21 Commonwealth. The Club’s President Elect is Cambridge Portuguese Credit Union CEO Rui Domingos, and its Vice President is Adilia Pereria President of Anthony’s Function, Inc. of Somerville.

Tucked away behind the Edgerly School at 11 Otis Ave. a large banner welcomes visitors to the “Somerville Boxing Club” an organization that celebrates its one year anniversary at this location later this month. The club teaches kids to box but has a more important mission.

Somerville Police and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force are seeking to identify and locate the suspect depicted above. At about 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, the suspect shown above robbed the Union Square branch of Citizens Bank. The suspected passed a note to the teller, demanding cash and stating that he had a gun. The suspect fled through the rear exit of the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

It used to be known as The Florentine Garden before it became Lucy’s. It was on that stretch of Medford Street that eventually leads you to John’s Auto Sales. Lucy’s joins the ranks of places in that area that are now gone like Bradlees and Roma Bakery. Remember when the hot bread sign was flashing on the bakery? Many times we would buy a few loaves of Scali and eat a whole loaf on the way home. I digress.

What comes to mind when you hear about a new movie by Tim Burton? It must be something dark, and twisted, and with Johnny Depp in it. Without the latter, but – undoubtedly dark and twisted – again, as many other Burton’s movies, Frankenweenie was released to the judgment of the youngest Somerville residents last Friday at the Somerville Theatre.

Literacy Activities, Prizes and ‘Curious George’ Highlight 2012 Somerville Early Childhood Literacy Fair
In celebration of Family Literacy Month, Somerville early education and care schools, programs and providers and other local community agencies will participate in the 2012 Early Childhood Literacy Fair on Saturday, November 17, from 10am to noon at the Arthur D. Healey School. This free event offers Somerville families information about the numerous resources available to families with young children in Somerville. Families are invited to join the festivities, explore books with their children, partake in a variety of family literacy activities, and meet other parents and friends in the neighborhood.

Magoun Square was once a thriving commercial district, offering an array of products to its neighbors and serving them as a community center. Many of us would like to see it fully resume those roles. Achieving this requires realism about the considerable challenges the Square faces.

Police officers patrolling the area in and around the Home Depot parking last Monday made a random RMV inquiry on a vehicle they were following.
The Registry data indicated that the vehicle was active, but it had failed its inspection earlier in the year. As officers continued to follow the vehicle out onto Mystic Ave. they noticed that there was a passing inspection sticker displayed.
