Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Superintendent of Inspectional Services, Eddie Nuzzo, announced that, following additional review and investigation into Friday’s incident at the Holiday Inn Somerville’s Night Games Lounge, several “life and safety” violations related to the building’s emergency backup systems were cited in the Lounge, leading to the indefinite suspension of its operating permit and immediate cancellation of events until further notice.

Bob (Pub) Publicover passed peacefully at home surrounded by the love of family and friends on December, 31, 2012. Bob, a lifelong resident of Somerville was the former owner/editor of The Somerville News and worked hard to make Somerville “The greatest place to live!” He was a co-founder of the Somerville High Scholarship Fund, was instrumental in remaking Davis Square into what it is today, a member of the Somerville Home Board of Trustees, and was both prominent and respected in local politics. He was a proud member of the Masons (King Solomon’s Lodge) and a much adored Dad Advisor with the Boston Chapter of DeMolay.

Grand Union Flag Raising

The 237th annual “Grand Union” flag-raising ceremony at Prospect Hill Park will be held on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 12:00 p.m.  A processional led by a re-enactor portraying General George Washington on horseback will leave from the City Hall Concourse at 11:30 a.m.  As always, members of the public are invited to participate, and are encouraged to wear traditional colonial clothing.  The annual ceremony commemorates the raising of the nation’s first official flag, featuring thirteen red and white horizontal stripes, atop Prospect Hill on New Year’s Day, 1776.  At the time, Prospect Hill was a key site in a string of fortifications created by Washington and the Continental Army in their siege of British troops in Boston during the first year of the American Revolution.

The event, on May 3, 4, and 5 is attended by many thousands of art lovers, admirers, patrons, and collectors, and is open and free to all. If you are a Somerville visual artist, you are eligible. All visual art media; beginning, emerging and established artists are encouraged to participate.
