Police pop porch poacher

Reports of a person taking packages from porches brought police officers to Bay State Ave. last week.

Initial witness reports described the suspect as being male, wearing a blue hoodie and orange vest. However, after combing the area, police spotted a female individual at the corner of Bay State Ave. and Kidder Ave. wearing the same type of clothing reported by witnesses.

Rep. Michael Capuano named to House Committee on Ethics

Rep. Mike Capuano was asked to serve on the House Committee on Ethics and the Democratic Caucus approved that recommendation today. This committee oversees all matters related to the Code of Official Conduct for House Members and their staff. It is the only House committee composed equally of Democratic and Republican Members.

“Bring me men to match my mountains, Bring me men to match my plains, Men with empires in their purpose, and new eras in their brains.” These words of the extraordinary poet, Samuel Walter Foss, were inscribed in granite on the rampart entrance to the parade field of the United States Air Force Academy for close to forty years. The words can now be found in the American Pavilion at Walt Disney’s EPCOT Center in Orlando, Florida. Foss was head librarian at the Somerville Public Library for 13 years, right up until his death in 1911 at the young age of fifty-three. His house was located at 249 Highland Avenue, just before Davis Square.

Wrong way driver caught with stolen plate

A police patrol unit observed a pickup truck traveling the wrong way down Newton St., which is a one-way street, last week.

The vehicle was followed to an Everett St. residence and the operator was subsequently detained and questioned by officers.

1000 for Evora

evora_1000_webGirls Basketball Senior Indira Evora scored her 1,000th point on January 21, 2013 vs. the Vikings of Winthrop. Evora led the team with 24 points beating the Vikings 66-55. Evora is one of four  females in the history of the program to score 1,000 points for Somerville.
