The City of Somerville Water Department is conducting a Flushing Program throughout the water distribution system. The City will be flushing hydrants and operating gate valves to maintain the distribution system. This work will take place weekly between the hours of 11 p.m.  Monday through 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Largest touring show in the world would generate up to  $10 million in revenue for local businesses

City of Somerville officials are working with Cavalia, Inc. to bring the northeast U.S. premiere of its $30 million show Odysseo to Assembly Row this summer. The production, which is an equestrian theatrical performance conceived of by one of the founders of Cirque du Soleil, has the potential to bring up to $10 million in revenues for local businesses—hotels, restaurants and more—and would also create local jobs for construction crews and service staff.

The City of Somerville and the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission announce that on Sunday, June 2, the historic Milk Row Cemetery on Somerville Avenue (adjacent to the Market Basket) will be open to the public from 1:30 to 4 p.m. This small historic site, established in 1804, is usually closed to the public except for two annual events in May and October. Volunteers dressed in Colonial period clothing will be on hand to educate visitors about the residents buried at Milk Row, as far back as Revolutionary times, and their history within the Somerville community. This volunteer docent program will open the Cemetery on a regular basis throughout the summer. The groups may also be appreciated as a peaceful repose for reading and contemplation.

I was reading in the news recently that a group of students from the Arthur D Healey School went to the White House and visited First Lady Michelle Obama. They went there to help her plant herbs and vegetables in the kitchen garden on the White House South Lawn.

A crowd twice the size of last year’s joined the Somerville High School Gay/Straight Alliance and Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone on Tuesday for the raising of the Pride flag at Somerville High School. The annual event, which raises the Pride flag in full view of both City Hall and the High School, is a declaration that the City of Somerville is an open, welcoming and affirming city for the LGBT community.

Kicking off with “Carnaval” along East Broadway, SomerStreets promotes active living, reconnecting with city neighborhoods

The City of Somerville’s fourth annual SomerStreets series kicks off for summer 2013 with Carnaval @ SomerStreets on East Broadway on Sunday, June 2 from noon to 4 p.m. SomerStreets is the City of Somerville’s take on the internationally-renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles, and opening them up for cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other modes of activity. Through SomerStreets, the City and its community partners aim to promote and encourage easy access to physical activity, fresh foods, and reconnecting with neighborhoods and businesses and their unique cultural elements in a thriving urban environment. Carnaval on June 2 is produced through a partnership with East Somerville Main Streets, and its programming will extend along East Broadway from the intersection of Broadway and McGrath Highway to Pennsylvania Ave., including a motion parade at noon, live music on two stages, interactive urban agriculture displays, arts and crafts, food, and fun!

On Tuesday, May 28, First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed students returning to the White House Kitchen Garden for the second time in as many months with an enthusiastic remark on the results of a joint Kitchen Garden planting effort on April 4, 2013.  Five Healey School students, Ariana Docanto, Gaby Lopez, Sarah Sweeting, Brian Chan and Lana Popovic, were among a group of 25 students returning to the White House to help harvest what they had planted less than two months prior.
