A few milestones highlighted another four-win week for the first-place Somerville Alibrandis baseball team, which improved its record to 22-3 in the Yawkey League. Also included in the squad’s record is a 3-0 loss to the second place Stoneham Sabers.

The First Armory – It was quarried and built from the bluestone beneath it, and today is the discernible seal of Somerville. Why do they call it the Powder House, and was it built to be a powder house?

It comes as little surprise to most of us, but the mayor confirmed it recently when he replied, “Absolutely,” when asked if he was considering a run for the Governor’s seat while at a speaking engagement last week.

Well- we are in the dog days–so I was browsing my archives in this sultry heat and I found an old review of mine ( Never published in my column) of a book about the late Beat poet Jack Micheline. Micheline was a North Beach/San Francisco poet–but he is read by many Somerville poets of my acquaintance… Hope you enjoy  and have a cool drink…perhaps at Sherman’s or Bloc11 or many of our cafes in the Paris of New England…

Somerville’s Rising Musical Stars made up of Somerville Public Schools Summer Wind Camp will be performing FREE at the Cross Street Center at 165 Broadway, Wednesday, July 24 at 11:30 am.  Somerville Wind Camp is open to all wind and percussion players who have played for at least one school year.  The campers meet for three hour days a week for ten days in july and work with three instructors: Richard Romanoff and Rosemary Sears (both SPS music teachers) and Anthony Prestigiovanni, who just graduated from UMASS Lowell with a degree in Music Education.

Leah Ferriabough, 28, of 180 Harvard St., Malden, July 15, 12:49 p.m., arrested at Alewife Brook Pkwy. on a charge of operation of a motor vehicle without a license, attaching wrong motor vehicle, and operation of a motor vehicle with a revoked registration.

A juvenile, July 16, 1:42 p.m., arrested on a warrant charge of armed and masked robbery.

Registration is now open for a free citizenship clinic on Saturday, July 27, in Somerville where residents seeking to become U.S. citizens can receive assistance in completing their naturalization applications or learn more about the naturalization process.
