Last week, the senate voted to defeat a bill that proposed to raise the current cap on charter schools in 29 districts. Beginning in 2017 the cap would rise from 18% to 23% of those school districts’ spending.

Somerville residents met last week to gather information and share their own ideas regarding the future development of the Powder House School site.

A few blocks away from Davis Square Station on Holland St., one finds the back of Powder House Community School. One can hardly tell it’s an abandoned school until they see the schoolyard, which is now still being used as a practice field for a local bicycle riding school.
On July 21, the City of Somerville called upon its residents, mainly those who live in Ward 7 of Somerville, to come up with plans to redevelop this abandoned facility after the city ended negotiations with Tufts University on its redevelopment March this year, due to not committing to a timetable.

Everybody seemed to want s’more of the Great Urban Cookout.

As the work week came to a close on Friday, Somerville residents joined friends and family at Lincoln Park for the 5th Annual Great Urban Campout.
A fire pit located in the center of the soccer field was a focal point of the event, drawing in crowds of children eager to roast marshmallows and visit with their fellow peers while on summer vacation.

What happened at Market Basket stores these past few weeks, and in particular this past week, was astounding to say the least.
Imagine employees of a large corporation picketing to get back the boss? What is this world coming to? When you come right down to it, it’s not about corporate greed, not about unions and demands (there isn’t any union at MB), it’s all about loyalty.

Around 25-35 employees and customers of Somerville Avenue Market Basket demonstrated in front of store this past weekend. Cars passing by honked their horns in support of the crowd.
Activity in the parking lot has changed, with no need to travel in circles looking for a vacant space, when there are spaces everywhere.

This selfie with the World Series Trophy was taken by Winter Hill resident and great guy Bobby Potaris who just happened to be visiting his cousin’s pizza shop in Arlington when the trophy was visiting there as well. Thanks to the security person who handles the trophy, Bobby got the shot. We think the picture is funny and, yes, Bobby is a fun person and a hard worker who owns his own construction company.
