In collaboration with the Somerville Farm to School Project, the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative held Literacy Pop-Up Events at eight Somerville schools in June 2014 that were attended by over 500 families.

In December of 2013, Somerville Public Schools were honored with a $45,000 dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to begin the planning and development of Somerville Farm to School, a recent runner-up winner in the Northeast Farm to School Recipes for Success Contest.

Coming up on Saturday, April 11 at 6 p.m., “Under the Roof Benefit 2015” for the Somerville Homeless Shelter’s 30th Anniversary. The Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) will host the dinner at the Center for Arts at the Armory in Somerville. To mark this milestone, a number of founding members of the SHC will be in attendance and honored for their initiative, vision, and compassion. While they are still “working to put themselves out of business,” they are committed to helping those in need for as long as there are homeless and hungry people in our community. Somerville firefighters took advantage of thinning ice conditions on Spot Pond in Stoneham last week to conduct realistic ice rescue training. The training took place over four days and familiarized firefighters with use of the department’s ice rescue suits and different pieces of ice rescue equipment.

Yes, all the potholes left over from the ravages of last winter’s record setting storms are annoying, ugly, and sometimes downright dangerous.

This recipe yields approximately 24 meatballs using a golf ball sized scoop (1-5/8″ diameter). I like to use a scoop so the meatballs look more uniform and cook evenly. Serve with your favorite pasta dish or make meatball subs. Enjoy!

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has announced that Carlos Colina, 32, of Cambridge, has been arraigned on charges of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and improper disposal of a body in connection with the discovery of human remains in Cambridge this past weekend.  Cambridge District Court Judge Roanne Sragow set bail at $1 million cash and bail was revoked in an open case involving this defendant.  The next scheduled court hearing for Colina is Tuesday, April 14.
