The event was attended by city officials, business and civic group leaders, local developers, and residents. According to Sandra L. Somerville Police Officer Sean Collier dedication organized by retired Somerville Police Officer John O’Connor & Deputy Chief Stephen Carrabino took place at the Somerville Police Department on Saturday January 31, 2015. Officer Collier was murdered by the Boston Marathon bombers in April 2013.B.A. Event Promotions was able to donate the funds necessary for the dedication plaque, from tremendous support of their events in Worcester, Hyannis, Harwich, Cambridge & Somerville. Sean worked many charity road races put on by many different organizations in Somerville, Massachusetts as an officer with the Somerville Auxiliary Police Department as well as his distinguished service as a police officer with the MIT Police Department, It was a sad day on Saturday but a good day to be able to dedicate the plaque at the Somerville Police Department to a wonderful person committed to community service.

Oh no, there it is again, a weather forecast of another snowstorm hitting the northeast over the weekend and affecting the Monday morning commute. I know, I know, I live in New England, but when the estimate of snowfall is in feet, not inches, spring can’t get here fast enough. And, under the circumstances, there’s only one thing to do, go grocery shopping of course. After all, I must get the bread and milk!

Ball Square’s Gil Barbosa “The Book Shop” Owner was a Survivor.
Gil Barbosa was a survivor. The owner of “The Book Shop” in Ball Square in Somerville kept his store alive during a time when many similar used bookstores had a rise and inevitable fall. Barbosa told me: “It is hard to believe that three and a half years have gone by and we are still here, and I am glad to have a very good landlord who understands and is sympathetic to small businesses.” But unfortunately the vagaries of the biz has caused the shop to close. Barbosa told me he had to work 7 days a week to keep it afloat, and even then times were hard–not to mention it compromised his health.

The City of Somerville’s Zoning Code Public Hearing scheduled for Tues., Feb. 10, has been rescheduled for March 5, 2015 at 6 p.m. The hearing will take place in the Aldermanic Chambers at City Hall.
