Hello, this is Mayor Joe Curtatone on Monday, Feb. 16, with an important update on the city’s snow removal operations and current snow emergency and parking ban.

Due to continued historic levels of snowfall and now more than seven feet of snow on the ground in Somerville, the city’s snow emergency and parking ban will remain in effect until further notice. Similar to our procedure following last week’s storms, later this week, we hope to announce rolling lifts of the parking ban as we are able to clear streets and as weather permits.

Citywide Parking Ban in Effect for All Streets: Park on the odd side (unless otherwise posted)

Please note that a citywide parking ban remains meaning that all cars must park on the odd-numbered side of the street unless otherwise posted. HOWEVER parking is now permitted on both sides of the following streets ONLY (unless otherwise posted)

Monday, Feb. 16 is Presidents Day. City Offices will be closed on Monday and trash will be on a one-day delay all week.

Midge Ure comes to Johnny D’s on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Midge Ure was born James Ure in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1953. He joined the Scottish pop band Salvation—later famous under the new name Slik—in the early 1970s. When that group disbanded in 1977, he joined the punk band The Rich Kids, having already turned down an offer to be the lead singer of an inchoate group called The Sex Pistols, of which Rich Kid Glen Matlock had been a member. After cutting the one and only album in the Rich Kids discography, he formed the new wave band Visage, then became a mid-tour replacement guitarist for the Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy before taking over on lead vocals another new wave band called Ultravox.

My Dad used to say that my parochial elementary school would cancel classes “every time The Pope sneezed!” Well, after the recent wave of snowstorms and school cancellations, it looks like The Pope did more than just sneeze.

Everyone knows where all this snow comes from – above us, of course. But where does it go to when we can manage to get it out of our way? So-called “snow farms” have been established in various locations throughout the city to serve as snow dumping sites where cleanup crews move the white stuff off the streets and other areas. The I-93 overpass (pictured to the right) and the Transfer Station at Brickbottom (below) are two such places that are seeing a lot of action with all the recent snowfall. It’s good to know that we have such out-of-the-way places too move the snow to. We know we’ve had enough of it on our streets, sidewalks, etc.

The opening reception for the Nave Gallery’s latest exhibition, Bite: Food as Art, will be taking place on Saturday – Valentine’s Day – February 14, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston, and the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development invite all interested community members to the first Lincoln Park DESIGN community meeting with our team of landscape architects who will introduce their staff, provide an analysis of the park’s existing conditions, and explain their plans for the design process ahead. The meeting will be held at the Argenziano School Cafeteria, 290 Washington St., on Tues., Feb. 24 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. All are welcome to attend and share the ideas.
