Legislation aimed at curbing the epidemic use of opioids brings hope for those who have searched for new tools to help in the battle against the rampant spread of drug addiction.

Governor Charlie Baker signed landmark legislation into law on Monday to address the deadly opioid and heroin epidemic plaguing the Commonwealth and was joined by a robust group including Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders, Senate President Stanley Rosenberg, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Attorney General Maura Healey, Auditor Suzanne Bump, members of the legislature, law enforcement, health care providers, community leaders, individuals in recovery and others.

Eagle Feathers #99 – The Eagle

It has been called the “king” of birds in legend and lore. Its image is found in over sixty variations scattered across the world. In this country, it is a symbol of our nation, a majestic image of power and freedom. It is the American Bald Eagle, and its image is readily identifiable on our government buildings, military uniforms, and at patriotic celebrations. In Somerville, as well as in other cities, the eagle covers its terrain by exhibiting itself on our coins and stamps, on our statues, in our illustrations, and perched atop our flagpoles.

There may be a few among us who have never stepped foot into Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant and Music Club, but it’s a sure thing that each and every one of us knows someone who has. And more than likely those who have done so have cherished memories to share of the legendary nightspot.

Monday, March 14 was Pi Day (3.14) – but not just any π day, it was a Well-Rounded π Day because it is the year 2016: 3.14.16! 3.159… rounds off to 3.16.

A tribute to Brian J Cloherty, who passed away five years ago, was held this past weekend. This is the 5th annual pub crawl in his honor. This picture was taken at Johnny D’s, one of the stops along the way on Saturday, a day before the club closed.

Paige Roberts is a member of the Bagel Bards, a literary group in Somerville, Mass. She is also the archivist for the Oliver Wendell Holmes Collection at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. When she is not working with this prestigious collection, she is often hiking and communing with nature.

Rebecca Kenneally, singer and conductor, is Chair of the Performing Arts Department and Choral Director at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, and director of the Old North Church Youth Choirs Director in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Kenneally conducts the choirs at Music at Port Milford Chamber Music Festival in Ontario, Canada, where she is also a faculty soprano soloist. She sings regularly in recitals and has many theater directing credits. Kenneally holds degrees in voice and conducting from Northwestern University and The New England Conservatory of Music.

Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan has confirmed that at approximately 6:30 p.m. tonight a passerby reported seeing the body of a deceased male in the Mystic River near the intersection of Shore Drive and Ten Hills Road in Somerville. State Police subsequently removed that body from the water.

Middlesex County District Attorney Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Haas have confirmed that Dorothy Steele, 77, of Cambridge, the victim of a hit and run crash on Sunday, February 28, 2016, has died. Steele was on Columbia St., Cambridge, in her wheelchair when she was struck and transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Ailton Ornelez, of 89 Grant, March 9, 10:01 p.m., arrested at Mystic Ave. on charges of malicious wanton destruction of property and felony nighttime breaking and entering.
