Sunday, May 22, at Sylvester Baxter Park at Assembly Row in Somerville, marked the exciting debut of a new family-friendly spring fundraiser, the Fast and Furriest 5K – Run, Walk, Wag for MSPCA–Angell. This new community event, which combined the interests of past Walk for Animals and Run Fur Fun participants, included a timed 5K fun run, a shorter walk, and a “Ducky Dash” kids’ fun run – each including canines, of course. The run and walk was followed by activities, vendor booths, food, contests, and entertainment for the whole family. All funds raised go to benefit all the animals served by the MSPCA–Angell in its adoption centers, hospitals, and programs.

A regular hipster in Union Square reading The Somerville Times. The gentleman, 42 years old, said he is a little old for the designated hipster label. He also told me that he loves Somerville, but like many he had to leave because of affordability issues. He still revisits Somerville on a regular basis. This is just one of the many stories in the “Paris of New England.”

I noticed it the night of May 5, when a fire raced through a row of homes in East Somerville and drove more than 50 people from 15 households into the street. As the buildings burned, our community moved equally fast to provide a safe landing place for the suddenly homeless victims.

Somerville Youth Arts Coordinator, Jimmy Del Ponte, presented the 2016 Somerville Rocks! youth talent show on Friday, May 2o at the Somerville High School Auditorium. Somerville Rocks! provides an opportunity for Somerville youth, ages 12 and older, to polish performance art and talents with twice-weekly rehearsals with performer and musician Jimmy Del Ponte. The concert featured Somerville youth bands, soloists, comedians, and other talented young residents.
ECOlogic and Together We Rise worked together to get some nice new bicycles to several local foster kids.

One local company recently found a way to make their employee teambuilding day mean more than just time out of the office.
ECOlogic, a local cleaning company, decided that they would partner with Together We Rise, a national non-profit focused on supporting kids and young adults in foster care, and as a team put together 37 bikes in one day.

Don’t forget good guy and friend to many here in the city, Alderman at Large and President of the Board Bill White is having a fundraiser on Thursday, June 2 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Cantina La Mexicana in Union Square. We’re very lucky to have Bill on the Board of Alderman. He’s one of the smartest and most forward thinking aldermen. He is currently in his fourth year as President of the Board of Alderman. You know you’re good when your colleagues on the Board keep voting for you every year for the office of President. Not in our lifetime has that accomplishment ever been made.
