I recently caught up with Laura Sanchez, who will be performing her flamenco piece “Welcome to Holland!?” It deals with motherhood, and caregiving through expressive dancing, poetry, and ample doses of humor.

Doug Holder: How has Somerville been for you as a creative?

Laura Sanchez: Somerville has become my home, not only where my son went to school, but also where I found my community and my artistic voice. For over ten years, I’ve been bringing flamenco to Somerville through various community events, and now, for the first time, I’ll be presenting my own full-length show here. I’ve been fortunate to receive support from the Somerville Arts Council to share Welcome to Holland!?, and I’m deeply grateful to present this work in the very community that has supported and inspired me.

Jason O’Toole is a former Poet Laureate of North Andover, MA, author of three poetry collections and four chapbooks. His newest collection, The Strange Misgivings of the Sadly Gifted, has been published by Dead Man’s Press Ink (2025). He was co-founder of The Anne Bradstreet Poetry Contest and has served as a judge for other contests, including the Tom Nattell Peace Poetry Prize. His work is internationally published in magazines and anthologies, including Love is for All of Us and The Rhysling Anthology. He also performed as vocalist of the NY hardcore punk band Life’s Blood and has contributed to books on punk subculture. He serves as treasurer of Independent Living Resource Center San Francisco and works in elder advocacy in Massachusetts.

Obituary: James L. Burns

James L. Burns of Belmont passed away on June 7, 2025 he was 78. Born in Boston and raised in East Somerville; where he lived much of his life, James was the son of the late Imelda E. (McKinnon) and Maurice J. Burns.  He was a member of the first graduating class of Arlington Catholic High School and served honorably in the US Army when drafted during the Vietnam War. He was then appointed to the Somerville Fire Department and began his 37-year career in May of 1973 and was primarily assigned to Fire Headquarters on Ladder 2, retiring in September of 2010. An avid sports fan, James enjoyed football, playing for the Charlestown Townies and following the Patriots, celebrating his favorite holiday – Super Bowl Sunday and tried his luck on an occasional horse race. Beyond his family, he also cherished time spent with his loyal dog, Bentley J. Burns.

Pride Month- BCBS celebrates with Proud Bikes

In celebration of Pride Month, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (“Blue Cross”), the title sponsor of Bluebikes, is bringing back its fleet of rainbow-wrapped “Proud Bikes” to support LGBTQIA+ health care across Greater Boston. A total of 100 Pride-themed bikes—50 classic and 50 ebikes—will be available throughout the Bluebikes system for the month of June.
