Heat Advisory for Somerville Thursday, June 19

East Branch Library will open as a cooling center 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Thursday 
 
High heat is expected in Somerville and the region on Thursday with actual temperatures in the 90s and feels-like temperatures around 100 degrees. At this time, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Thursday. Community members are encouraged to review ways to stay cool, healthy, and safe. The forecasted conditions can cause heat illness if proper precautions are not taken.

 I peeped into a colleague’s office to say hi, and we got on the subject of the songs of 1966. We were both 13 years old back then, and we couldn’t believe all the great songs that came out that year.

As we all know, hearing a song unleashes thoughts, feelings, and memories that cannot be described but send us someplace very special. Here are just a few of the songs of 1966: 96 Tears, Summer In The City, See You In September, Gloria, Black is Black, Yellow Submarine, The Sounds of Silence, Barbara Ann, Time Won’t Let Me, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Shapes of Things, Wipe Out, Dirty Water, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, Homeward Bound and many more classic hits. Google “top songs of 1966” and you will be blown away. That is, if you are in that special age group that will appreciate it.

The Joint Committee on Environment and Natural Resources considers environmental issues that impact the Commonwealth including parks, conservation, clean air and water, noise pollution, hunting and fishing, solid waste disposal, and more.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Veterans Vietnam Memorial

 On Thursday, June 12, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Central Hill Veterans Vietnam & Korean Wars Memorial on the front lawn of Somerville High School.

The Central Hill Veterans Vietnam and Korean War Memorial Project was part of the new Somerville High School Campus design, which opened on March 4, 2021. The first phase of this project is reinstalling the Vietnam and Korean War memorials in front of the high school, which will be part of a memorial walk with spaces that chronologically honor veterans dating back to the Revolutionary War. Belko Landscaping was awarded the construction of this project.
