Bhuwan Thapaliya is a poet from Kathmandu, Nepal. He is the author of five poetry collections, including Safa Tempo: Poems New and Selected (Nirala Publications, New Delhi) and Slipping into Another World (Ukiyoto Publishing). His work has received international recognition, appearing in esteemed literary journals and global anthologies. His poetry has been featured in Life in Quarantine: Witnessing Global Pandemic Initiative – a project supported by the Poetic Media Lab and the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis at Stanford University– as well as in the International Human Rights Art Festival and Poetry and Covid, an initiative funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council in collaboration with the University of Plymouth and Nottingham Trent University. He has read his work and participated in literary seminars across South Korea, India, the United States, Thailand, Cambodia, and Nepal.

Residential Breaking and Entering
25040107: On 7/10/25 at approximately 11:06 p.m., Somerville Police responded to a residence on Grove St. for a report of a past breaking and entering. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with the victim, who stated she left her home and when she returned, noticed the back door ajar and items in the bathroom were displaced. The victim also reported that cash was stolen.

Court hearing held on Massachusetts sanctuary cities’ challenge to federal funding threats 
 
Two sanctuary Cities in Massachusetts—Somerville and Chelsea—had their first hearing in federal court today on the filing of a preliminary injunction asking a federal court to block the Trump Administration’s attempHts to strip them of federal funding because they refuse to be coerced into participating in the Administration’s mass deportation efforts.  
Represented by Lawyers for Civil Rights, the cities filed a motion for a preliminary injunction on June 3 closely following a formal notice issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), designating both Cities as jurisdictions that must change their policies “immediately” or face consequences.

Obituary: Lillian J. DiFraia-Alves

Lillian J. DiFraia-Alves, of Wellesley; and a former longtime Somerville resident, passed away suddenly at home on July 14, 2025, she was 66. Born in Boston and raised in Somerville, Lillian was the cherished daughter of the late Lillian J. (Ivester) and Ralph DiFraia.

 A graduate of Somerville High School, she received her hairdressing license and also served as a nanny in child care for many years.
