The Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) announced a tax amnesty program that will run from November 1 to December 30, 2024. The program will forgive penalties for some taxpayers who are able to pay in full their tax balances and interest. When the Legislature included the amnesty in the state budget it projected raising $100 million in revenue. The program will also resolve the tax burdens of those who can make amends within the limited time window. A win-win, it seems. Except for those distressed taxpayers who cannot quickly come up with a lump sum to pay off their outstanding debts.

Residential Breaking and Entering
24063136: On 10/10/24 at approximately 12:00 a.m., Somerville Police responded to a residence on Prospect St. for a past breaking and entering. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated he was sleeping and awoke to a male party in his room attempting to take his backpack. The victim confronted the suspect and the suspect fled out of the house.

Message from Somerville Public Schools:
As of 10:45 this morning, the Secure and Hold at SHS has been lifted. The school was placed into a Secure and Hold at 9:30 a.m. due to a threat made through a phone call to the school. SPS administrators and the Somerville Police Department conducted a thorough search of the school for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. We found no evidence of a safety concern in the building and all school operations have now returned to normal.

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and The Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD), in cooperation with Southville Development Partners, LLC and 115 Thurston, LLC, are pleased to announce the sale of four (4) deed-restricted condominium to eligible, first-time homebuyer households at a below market price through the City’s Inclusionary Housing Program. The units will be offered to households with a yearly gross income at or below 80% Area Median Income (AMI) at price tier P1 and to households between 80% and 110% AMI at price tier P2.

The new Construction Advisory Group held its first meeting on Tuesday, October 8.

On October 8, the new Construction Advisory Group (CAG), as requested by Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, held its first meeting to address the continued displacement of PK-8 grade students from the Winter Hill Community Innovation School (WHCIS). After the school temporarily closed in June 2023 after a chunk of concrete fell in a stairwell, and then indefinitely closed after the discovery of asbestos in August 2023, Winter Hill students have been attending the Edgerly Education Center and the Capuano School for over a year.
