Our View of the Times – April 15

On April 15, 2020, in Latest News, by The Somerville Times

We hear a lot about front line workers these days, and rightfully so. These are the people who are fighting to save lives and lessen the misery inflicted by the COVID-19 epidemic. They are the world’s heroes.

But it goes beyond the medical profession. When we think of all those who are putting themselves on the line to aid and protect us we need to also consider our dedicated first responders. Police, fire, EMTs, and members of the military. They come to our aid when we are in need and help to keep order in the midst of this strange and trying time.

Others still are worthy of our respect and gratitude. From the stockers and cashiers who expose themselves daily to the danger of infection as they provide us with food and other essentials in the stores, pharmacies, and other vital suppliers of our most basic needs. Remember the postal workers and delivery drivers.

Let’s think about the thoughtful citizen who checks in with an elderly neighbor to make sure they are doing well and have everything they need. The school teacher who reaches out to provide virtual home schooling to for the children of families who are sheltering in place. And so many others from everyday walks of life who rise to the occasion to show what the best of humanity can offer.

In a certain sense, we are all on the front line. By simply following the stay at home advisories and wearing our masks in public, we are contributing to the inevitable victory over this deadly disease.

We thank and honor every one of these heroes among us, whoever they may be.
