“SomerVIP” launches March 4 with community event

Program offers incentives, technical support for landlords and realtors who lease to residents holding vouchers.

The Somerville Office of Housing Stability (OHS) and the Somerville Homeless Coalition are launching SomerVIP, a Section 8 Voucher Incentive Program, and invite community members to a kickoff event on Wednesday, March 4, to learn more, including how landlords and realtors can receive incentives and technical support through the program.

While all are welcome to come learn about this exciting new program, the kick-off event will primarily be focused on information for landlords who rent units in Somerville, and realtors serving the Somerville area.

SomerVIP offers one-time incentive payments, money for necessary repairs, and technical support to landlords and realtors who lease Somerville properties for the first time to Somerville residents holding vouchers and other mobile tenant-based programs. The program is being administered by the Somerville Homeless Coalition, which is currently accepting initial applications from Somerville residents holding mobile vouchers.

The kickoff event and workshop is planned for Wednesday, March 4, from 6

While I agree with this program most if not all landlords know that they don’t need section 8 tenants. And they’ve known for a long time. The price to rent is so high section 8 can’t cover it no matter what incentives they give. And with that price they don’t have to accept whatever baggage comes with section 8. Gentrification is getting worse and will be more worse as time goes on. We have more registered dogs than children.

I would not mind so much except for the rules. I run into this a lot in my work and the biggest problem is the the rights of the tenants. It’s my place and I want the say. Which is why it remains empty.

This is a joke, right? They spend a year trying to take away our property rights any way they can, now they want us to help by renting to Section 8 tenants? I wouldn’t help them out even if I wanted to. I went online to re-order my permit parking stickers and guess what, at the end it asked if I had an off-street place to park my car. I answered ‘no’. Watch for that to be the next thing. A fine if you don’t use your driveway, or a requirement that you let someone else use your driveway. No thanks!
